The World Economic Forum reports that cyberattacks increased by 38% globally in 2022, and the threat is expected to rise exponentially with the advent of generative AI models. The attackers seem to be one step ahead, and human defenders are struggling to keep pace.
"AI-based attacks are going to be much more pervasive, much more adaptable and much more rapid than they were in the past," warns Hudi Zack, a cyber industry expert and former head of the technology division of the Israel National Cyber Directorate. Eden Zaraf, CTO and co-founder of the cyber firm Kayran, agrees, stating that "AI is already changing cybersecurity in terms of attackers that can already generate malware and also defenders that can use AI to predict and understand when attacks happen."
Some companies are already relying on AI for defense purposes, such as the Tel Aviv-based startup Cognni. Cognni's AI-based solution can autonomously map, detect and investigate exposures in companies' critical information assets.
However, the biggest challenge facing cybersecurity firms is the development of AI systems that can independently and autonomously manage the defense campaign against AI-based attacks.
Despite the challenges, generative AI is also seen as an opportunity for businesses in the cybersecurity sector. Guy Eisdorfer, co-founder and CEO of Cognni, says, "At the end of the day, it's generating jobs for a company like us to reinvent the way we protect information and give solutions to solve it."
