Mastercard and Network International Unleash AI Power to Tackle Fraud and Improve Digital Commerce
Mastercard, a global technology company in the payments industry, and Network International, the leading enabler of digital commerce across the Middle East and Africa, have formed a powerful alliance in the fight against fraud. As payment card fraud losses are projected to reach a staggering $49 billion by 2030, Mastercard and Network International are taking a stand to reduce the costs and risks for acquirers.
Mastercard's Brighterion Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is the secret weapon in this battle, learning the warning signs of fraud and alerting acquirers and merchants in real-time to prevent the completion of fraudulent transactions and costly chargebacks. This sophisticated AI technology has the potential to deliver up to $1 trillion in additional value each year, according to McKinsey estimates.
In 2019, Mastercard made a bold $300 million investment as a cornerstone investor in Network International, followed by an additional commitment towards developing innovative payment solutions. This partnership has allowed Mastercard to support Network International with Brighterion's AI technology, reducing the operational overhead on acquirers and merchants and improving the experience for customers.
Khalid Elgibali, Division President of Middle East and North Africa for Mastercard, says, "At Mastercard, we use the latest cutting-edge technology to stay ahead of fraudsters and secure the full payments ecosystem." Nandan Mer, Group Chief Executive Officer of Network International, adds, "Adding Brighterion to Network's range of solutions allows us to enhance our ability to provide financial institutions, merchants, and their customers with safe, secure, and seamless processing."

AI Love Letters: The Risks and Rewards of Artificial Intelligence in Romance
In the lead-up to this year's Valentine's Day, a seminal study by cybersecurity company McAfee has shed new light on the perils and promises of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the realm of love and communication. Dubbed "Modern Love," the study surveyed 5,000 people across nine countries, including India, and the findings were both illuminating and alarm-inducing.
According to the report, 78% of Indian respondents could not distinguish between a love letter written by the popular AI tool ChatGPT and one written by a human. In fact, an overwhelming 62% of Indian adults plan to use AI to write their love letters this Valentine's Day, a staggering figure that surpasses all other countries surveyed. Yet, while 60% of Indian respondents preferred a machine-generated love note, with 59% saying it would make them feel more confident, a staggering 57% would be offended if they discovered the love letter they received was written by a machine.
The study also revealed the increasing difficulty of distinguishing between real and fake information online, with 76% of Indian respondents admitting to being catfished or knowing someone who has. The dangers of engaging with strangers online were also brought to the forefront, with criminals exploiting the vulnerability of those searching for love. A staggering 76% of Indian respondents who had engaged with a stranger online reported being asked to transfer money, and personal information, such as place of birth or passport information, can be extracted over time and used for illegal activities.
The findings of McAfee's "Modern Love" serve as a cautionary tale, a wake-up call to be vigilant in the digital age and to be able to differentiate between real and fake information. The promise and peril of AI in the realm of love and communication is a complex and multifaceted issue, and this study provides a critical starting point for further examination and exploration.
