NASA Utilizes AI to Design Space Hardware for Artemis Missions to the Moon

NASA has turned to artificial intelligence (AI) software to design specialized hardware that is stronger and lighter than traditional components for its upcoming Artemis missions to the moon. The use of AI is expected to be a game-changer for the US space agency, which is collaborating with European, Canadian, and Japanese counterparts to land the first woman and first person of color on the lunar surface.

According to NASA engineers, the AI software is being used to design spacecraft and mission hardware that can tolerate higher structural loads while weighing significantly less. The evolved structure parts, which resemble a bone-like structure, are being designed by a research engineer called Ryan McClelland, who has dubbed them "evolved structures."

To create the evolved structure parts, a computer-assisted design (CAD) specialist identifies the off-limits areas, blocks out a path to prevent lasers or optical sensors from being blocked, and adds spaces for technicians' hands. Once these areas have been defined, the AI software connects the dots and produces complex structure designs in as little as a few hours.

NASA engineers believe that the use of AI for space hardware design is a significant breakthrough that could save up to two-thirds of the weight of traditional components. They say the software lowers the risk of potential points of failure, with evolved structures having stress factors ten times lower than parts produced by a human expert.

"We found it actually lowers risk," says McClelland. "After these stress analyses, we find the parts generated by the algorithm don't have the stress concentrations that you have with human designs. The stress factors are almost ten times lower than parts produced by an expert human."

NASA has already adopted the tech for several projects, including astrophysics balloon observatories, Earth-atmosphere scanners, space weather monitors, and space telescopes. The space agency is also set to use AI in the Mars Sample Return mission to bring back rock and dust samples from the Red Planet in 2026.

The use of AI in space hardware design is a sign of the increasing use of technology in space exploration. While the use of drones and autonomous weapons has raised concerns among lawmakers, Professor Frans Osinga from Leiden University believes that the use of smaller drones can empower ground troops and reduce their vulnerability. Osinga also argued that autonomous systems could provide an effective alternative to sending human peacekeepers, reducing the risk of involvement in conflict.

However, Ingvild Bode, Associate Professor of International Relations at the University of Southern Denmark, expressed concerns about the integration of autonomous technologies into weapons systems. Bode noted the technology’s inherent lack of situational awareness and increased system complexity, which can result in uncertainties around when force will be used.

The conflict in Ukraine has raised concerns about the use of autonomous technologies on the battlefield, with NATO looking to acquire such technologies for deterrence purposes. As superpowers compete to keep up with one another amid a race of interest, swarms of automated drones could be used to target surface-to-air missile sites along the Eastern stretch of the bloc, posing a huge threat to NATO.

Study Finds Women Underrepresented in AI Depictions in Film, Perpetuating Inequalities.

In a recent study by the University of Cambridge, it was discovered that Hollywood has been perpetuating gender inequalities when it comes to the portrayal of artificial intelligence professionals. According to the study, just 8% of depictions of AI professionals in 100 years of film were women. This is a damning statistic that highlights the extent of gender inequality in the AI industry.

The researchers analysed over 1,400 films and identified the 142 most influential films featuring AI made between 1920 and 2020. They discovered that 92% of all AI scientists and engineers on screen were men, despite the fact that men only make up around 74% of the actual AI workforce.

Films such as Iron Man and Ex Machina are believed to promote cultural stereotypes that AI is the product of lone male geniuses. The lack of women on screen may be linked to a lack of female directors, as not a single influential film with an AI plotline was directed solely by a woman, according to the study.

“Gender inequality in the AI industry is systemic and pervasive,” said co-author Kanta Dihal from the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence. “Mainstream films are an enormously influential source and amplifier of the cultural stereotypes that help dictate who is suited to a career in AI.”

These findings are particularly concerning as we enter the age of artificial intelligence.
