India emerges as global leader in AI skills and talent concentration, requires 1 million professionals by 2024: Nasscom report

In a groundbreaking report by Nasscom, India has emerged as the leader in artificial intelligence (AI) skills penetration and talent concentration among all G20 and OECD countries. The report, titled "State of Data Science and AI Skills in India: Data and the Art of Smart Intelligence", was prepared in association with Salesforce and Draup.

According to the report, India's AI skills penetration factor is 3.09, three times more than any other country, and the country ranks fifth globally in AI scientific publications. Nasscom has also projected that India will need over one million data science and AI professionals by 2024 to meet the growing demand for digital skills, especially for AI/Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics and Data Science.

The study revealed that ML Engineer, Data Engineer, Data Scientist, Data Architect and DevOps Engineer are the top five roles accounting for 73% of all AI job openings in India. The report also highlighted that more than 1,900 AI-focused start-ups are currently providing innovative solutions in areas such as conversational AI, NLP, video analytics, disease detection, fraud prevention and deep fakes detection.

Debjani Ghosh, President of Nasscom, said that "AI-led disruption in India's core sectors alone has a potential impact of $500 billion on India's economy in GVA terms by 2026."

As of August 2022, India's total demand for data science and AI was 629,000, with an installed talent base of 416,000. The report also noted that the current demand-supply gap in AI and data science stands at 51%, a significantly lower figure compared to other major economies such as the US.

The Shocking Speed of AI Advancement: How Large Language Models Will Transform Our World

As I delved deeper into the world of artificial intelligence, I realized that it was improving at a pace that most humans could not even fathom. The current revolution of Large Language Models (LLMs) was just the beginning. It all started with the advent of "transformer neural networks" back in 2017.

I must admit, I was not entirely convinced about the capabilities of these models when I first encountered them. However, as I continued to spend more time exploring their capabilities, I was surprised by their true potential. The possibilities of these models are endless and their implications are far-reaching. They have the power to change the world in ways that we cannot even imagine.

One incident that left a lasting impression on me was that of AlphaZero at DeepMind. The neural-net project was set up in late 2017 and within a matter of hours, it became the best chess-playing entity that had ever been created. This proved that under the right conditions, AI could improve at an astonishingly fast pace.

The most recent advances in LLMs have been impressive. The model released last year, ChatGPT, which is sometimes labeled GPT-3.5, left me in awe. GPT-4 is on its way, possibly in the first half of this year. In just a few years, these models have gone from being curiosities to being integral to the work routines of many people I know. I will be teaching my students how to write a paper using LLMs this semester.

The potential of LLMs is not limited to just writing papers. They can also write software code and act as tutors. They are not always reliable, but they can provide new ideas and inspiration for writing and organizing notes. The possibilities are endless.

As I started to divide the people I knew into three groups- those who were not yet aware of LLMs, those who complained about their current LLMs, and those who had some inkling of the startling future before us- I couldn't help but wonder what the future held for us. The development of LLMs is like a larva due to sprout into a butterfly. We should be prepared for the changes that LLMs will bring, and embrace their potential.
